A Musing, Aphorism, and Heuristic (or something like that)…

i) You can be richer right now by wanting less…

Being rich is relative.

You can be rich in different things…

Money, friends, food…

But, no matter what it is you can be richer right now by wanting less.

And bonus - needing less.

Enough said really.

It’s a great quote to remember the beauty of life.

To be able to find joy in the simple things you come across daily.

That’s the way to the good life.

iii) The root of suffering is desire…


This comes from the school of Buddhism.

Happiness comes not with wanting more, but with wanting what you have.

There will always be more…

So if your joy comes from getting things, fulfillment will always be out of grasp.

Here’s a great quote from Naval Ravikant on what desire is:

“Desire is a contract that you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want.”

People like to know you are listening to them.

Here are a few ways to show them you are:

i) Make a Cue

Nod your head.

Say words like “Yes” and “Okay” and “Interesting”

ii) Mirroring

You’ve likely heard of this technique before.

If not it's repeating back the last few words or the main idea of what the other person said.

Don’t overdo this as it becomes disingenuous fast.

iii) Meaningful Questions

This is the best tip.

Ask questions you actually care to hear the answer to.

It’s hard to act as if you care if, you don’t.

The point isn’t to act at all…

The point is to guide the conversation to be interesting for both parties.

One Actionable Tip to Improve your Life Today:

Put aside 5-10 minutes.

Grab a pen and paper.

Blabber all your thoughts onto the page until the time is up (continue if you want).

It doesn’t need structure or to make sense

Your first sentence can literally be:

‘Some dude on the internet told me to do this so I’m going to write whatever random thoughts come to my mind for the next 5 minutes…’
