Issue #10

Good morning friends!

Shall we get right into it…

Quote of the day:

“Imagine you’re on your deathbed, and standing around your deathbed are the ghosts representing your unfulfilled potential—the ghosts of the ideas that you never acted on, the ghosts of the talents that you didn’t use.

And they’re standing around your bed angry and upset.

They say, ‘We came to you because you could’ve brought us to life, and now we have to go to the grave together.’

So I ask you today: ‘How many ghosts are going to be around your bed when you’re dying?’”

-Les Brown

Watch Denzel Washington present it below:

A Musing, Aphorism, and Heuristic (or something like that)…

i) Setting and pursuing goals is like an archery competition.

In practice, you will develop your skills and acquire information. At the competition, your preparation will do you well. But there will be a point where you enter the unknown…The wind could change in an instant and the sun can break through the clouds to glare right into your eyes.

When setting goals you consider what path you should take, the things you will need to do, and whether you should even pursue the goal you want.

But it won’t mean anything until you enter the arena of life, and once you’re there you’ll realize there is much you can’t prepare for.

ii) It’s better to be alone then in bad company - George Washington

Life’s too short to spend it with people who bring you down.

Find those who:

  • Inspire you

  • Bring joy to your day

  • Encourage you

Here's how you can tell someone is your friend: A) You can tell them bad news, and they'll listen. B) You can tell them good news, and they'll help you celebrate.

Jordan Peterson

iii) A friend to all is a friend to none - John Wodroephe

A friend is someone you can trust.

How can you be trusted if one does not know who you are?

If you agree with everybody, you are nobody.

Have your thoughts and have enough of a backbone to say them.

You don’t have to please everyone; remain kind, but realize you don’t need their approval.

Cocktail Time: 3 Interesting facts; 1 Communication tip; And the occasional joke

3 Interesting Facts:

i) An ant has the highest brain-to-body ratio.

ii) The Dalai Llama has a taste for nice things including Rolexes.

iii) The current Dalai Llama was born at a house where ashes that cooked the previous Dalai Llama’s lunch were buried out front.

Communication tip:

If you get nervous in novel situations you are focusing too much on yourself.

Forget about yourself and forget about the other person by focusing on the contents of the conversation.

Become curious about what’s being said as if it was a new book or movie you can’t wait to dive into.

The more you do this the easier it will become.

Bonus - having some sort of meditation or journaling practice will help with this.

One Actionable Tip to Improve your Life Today:

In times of stress or when wanting to relax try this breathing pattern:

Take a quick inhale through the nose to fill most of your lungs. Then quickly take a second shorter inhale, to fill the rest of your lungs up.

Exhale the breath through the mouth by making a loud audible sigh.

Repeat as needed.

Remember you’re trying to relax don’t strain yourself.
